VOIP, known by many names, translates to Voice Over Internet Protocol. What does this mean? Simply stated, VOIP entails allowing telephone conversations to travel over the Internet through an IP based network. In the industry, VOIP may also be referred to as IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband. Even with so many names, VOIP still means only one thing for businesses large and small - savings!
VOIP literally converts voice conversations into digital signals, which are then passed over the Internet. If a call is made via VOIP to a regular telephone, the signal is converted to a regular telephone signal. You may use Voice Over Internet Protocol using your computer, or a traditional telephone connected to a VOIP adapter. In certain locations, such as airports, VOIP services may be wirelessly available to users.
VOIP services require a Broadband Internet connection via a cable modem, or high speed DSL or LAN connection. This high tech service may decrease or totally eliminate long distance charges!
