WAN, or Wide Area Network, is an expansive network, covering a large geographical area across a town, region, nation or the world. The Internet is the most popular and largest example of a Wide Area Network. A WAN may be used to connect LANs, or Local Area Networks, allowing remote communication between users, who are connected to the network.
WANs are built privately for one particular group, company or organization, and are used solely by the group they are created for. Such Wide Area Networks may exist for corporate, military or banking networks, just to name a few.
WANs are often connected through telephone systems, leased lines or satellites to create a vast telecommunication structure from a Local Area Network.
